Traditional tattoos in Urbandale and Des Moines

I’m Lexi Ross, a tattoo artist at Revival Tattoo Studio in Urbandale, Iowa. I tattoo American traditional: bold black outlines, solid shading and a strong color palette. Roosters, daggers, tigers, eagles, butterflies, grim reapers and bombs are all in my traditional work, and I want to do more of it.

What makes a tattoo traditional

American traditional tattoos use heavy black outlines, simple solid shading and a short list of bold colors, usually red, yellow, green and black. The designs are simplified on purpose, so they read clearly from across a room and keep reading clearly for decades.

Classic traditional subjects

Traditional has a set of classic subjects that never go out of style:

  • Daggers, often through roses, hearts or animals
  • Animals: roosters, tigers, eagles and snakes
  • Butterflies and moths
  • Skulls and grim reapers
  • Hearts, banners and lettering

Classic designs, your way

I like redrawing classic subjects with a personal twist, like adding roses to one of my butterfly dagger designs or turning a fishing lure into a traditional piece. Tell me what the tattoo is about and I’ll build the traditional version around it.

Why traditional holds up

Bold lines and solid color are why traditional tattoos age well. As ink settles slightly over the years, a thick outline still reads clearly, while very thin lines and tiny details can blur. If you want a tattoo that still looks sharp in twenty years, traditional is a strong choice.

Traditional flash

A lot of traditional tattooing starts from flash: designs drawn ahead of time and tattooed as they are, or with small changes. I draw my own flash sheets. Ask me which designs are still open, or pick one and I’ll size it to fit your spot.

Traditional in black and grey

Traditional doesn’t have to be in color. Bold outlines with black shading work just as well, like my butterfly dagger and grim reaper pieces.

Questions about traditional

Is traditional the same as old school?

Mostly, yes. People use “American traditional” and “old school” for the same bold-outline, limited-color style.

Can a traditional tattoo be small?

Yes, but the style works because of its bold lines, so small pieces need simple designs. Palm-size and up gives the most room.

Can you add traditional pieces to a patchwork sleeve?

Yes. Traditional pieces are often collected one at a time into a patchwork sleeve. Send a photo of your arm and I’ll suggest sizes and spots.
