Black and grey tattoos in Urbandale and Des Moines

I’m Lexi Ross, a tattoo artist at Revival Tattoo Studio in Urbandale, Iowa. Most of my black and grey work uses stipple shading, which builds soft shadows out of small dots. I tattoo animals, florals, pet portraits, memorial pieces, handwriting, script and paw prints in black and grey.

What stipple shading is

Stipple, also called dotwork shading, builds shadows out of small dots instead of solid washes of grey. Dots packed close together read as darker, and spaced-out dots read as lighter.

It’s the way I like to shade most. It gives a soft, textured finish that works especially well on florals, animals and ornamental pieces like moths and mandalas.

Memorial tattoos

A lot of my black and grey work is memorial work: an eagle for someone who has passed, a locket with a dog’s photo inside, a pair of heels and lilacs to remember a mom.

If you’re planning a memorial piece, bring photos, names, dates and anything that reminds you of the person or pet. We’ll work out a design that feels like them.

Handwriting, script and paw prints

To turn someone’s handwriting into a tattoo, bring a clear photo or scan of the writing, like a card or a letter. I clean it up so it reads well on skin while keeping it theirs.

For paw prints, an ink print or a clear, straight-on photo of the paw works best. I’ve tattooed single paws, paws with names, and paws worked into larger designs.

How black and grey ages

Black and grey tattoos hold up well over time. Black is the most stable tattoo ink, and grey shading softens gradually rather than disappearing.

Sun is the main thing that fades any tattoo. Once yours has healed, keeping it covered or using sunscreen keeps the shading crisp longer.

Placement ideas

Black and grey works almost anywhere. A few spots that suit it well:

  • Forearm and calf: portraits, animals and vertical pieces.
  • Upper arm and shoulder: larger animals and florals.
  • Ribs and collarbone: script and fine line pieces.
  • Back: large pieces. My first full back piece was blackwork.

Questions about black & grey

What’s the difference between black and grey and blackwork?

Black and grey uses shading in different tones of grey to create depth. Blackwork relies on solid black areas and bold patterns. I do both; most of my portfolio is black and grey with stipple shading.

Can you turn a photo of my pet into a tattoo?

Yes. Send a few clear, well-lit photos. I design from them and can add flowers, a name or a paw print.

Will stipple shading fade?

All tattoos soften a little over the years. Stipple shading is built from dots that heal smooth, and good aftercare and sunscreen keep it looking clean longer. Aftercare instructions →
