What a birth flower tattoo is
Every month has a traditional birth flower, the same way it has a birthstone. A birth flower tattoo turns those flowers into a personal piece. Your own month, your kids’ months, a partner, a parent, or someone you are remembering.
The most popular version is a family bouquet: one stem for each person, arranged into a single piece. A single birth flower as a small stem works just as well.
The birth flowers by month
The most common birth flower list in the US:
- January: carnation
- February: violet
- March: daffodil
- April: daisy or sweet pea
- May: lily of the valley
- June: rose
- July: larkspur or water lily
- August: gladiolus or poppy
- September: aster or morning glory
- October: marigold
- November: chrysanthemum
- December: narcissus or holly
Family bouquets
To design your bouquet, send me the birth months of everyone you want included, plus any flowers you would like to swap in. I arrange them into one piece that flows with the placement.
One of my favorite pieces is a family birth flower bouquet running down the spine. Tell me where yours is going and roughly how big, and I will plan the arrangement around it.
Fine line, stipple, or color
Birth flowers work in any of my floral styles. Fine line suits small, delicate bouquets. Stipple shading gives petals soft depth without heavy black. Full color makes each flower read clearly, which suits larger bouquets.
If you are not sure which to pick, tell me the look you like and I will suggest what fits your placement and size.

Questions about birth flower tattoos
What if I do not like my birth month’s flower?
Swap it. Plenty of people trade their month’s flower for one that means more to them. Tell me which months to use and which flowers you love, and I will build the bouquet around that.
Can you fit five or six birth flowers in one tattoo?
Yes, but detail needs room. A bouquet with several flower types needs enough space so each flower stays readable as it ages. I will tell you what size your design needs.
Do birth flower tattoos have to be black and grey?
No. I do them in fine line, stipple shaded black and grey, and full color. Daffodils, sweet peas, and irises all look great in color.
Can you add a birth flower to a tattoo I already have?
Yes. A birth flower stem is an easy way to add to a sleeve or fill a gap. Send a photo of what you have.
Are birth flower tattoos only for moms?
Not at all. They work for anyone: your own month, your kids, a partner, a sibling, a friend, or someone you are remembering.
